On 22nd July, 2012, 3 Av, the Darlington Hebrew Congregation had the great joy of hosting the first chuppah to be celebrated in the new building. The community were joined by family and friends of the couple and Rabbi Barbara Borts officiated. Unusally family in attendance included children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren of the bride and groom! Little did Bess and Jimmy Robertson realise when they asked Rabbi Borts for ‘something special’ to mark their 40th (civil) wedding anniversary how special that something would become. 40 years ago they were able to have just a brief register office ceremony; this time surrounded by family and friends they were able to stand under the newly renovated chuppah in the synagogue they attend. All their children and grandchildren had a part to play in the ceremonies. Another unusual aspect of the wedding was that the bride and groom gave presents! Personal gifts to Rabbi Borts in recognition not only of her help in making the day so special but also her help in preparing Jimmy for his conversion, to the McAllister family for their help in renovating the chuppah and a presentation to the shul chair, Peter Freitag, of a painting for the synagogue executed by the bride to mark this very special occasion. The wedding was followed by a reception in Newton Aycliffe where the happy couple have their home.
