The DHC Channukah party was once again a great success. The shul was packed with people of all ages but it was especially gratifying to have so many children. They were all a great credit to their families in the way they joined in with all the fun. A large group of youngsters set about energetically playing dreidel and nearly all of them completed a Channukah card as part of a colouring competition. Later in the afternoon DHC Chair, Bess Robertson awarded the participants a medal and there were more prizes for all those who answered questions in a Channukah quiz.
Thanks to the efforts of Bess and her husband, Jimmy, the shul was beautifully decorated and there was a magnificent display of tombola prizes. The tickets were very popular but there were still some prizes to be won. It was decided to keep these for our next party at Purim. Thanks are owed to all who so generously donated prizes and helped organise and run the tombola during the afternoon, not forgetting everyone who bought tickets.
The entertainer had several enthusiastic volunteer assistant magicians and a lively participating audience of adults and kids!
Whilst thanking all who came and enjoyed the party, brought so much delicious food and helped in some way during the afternoon including clearing up; special mention is required for our social club organiser, Estelle Solomon for co-ordinating all the catering…and then spending most of the party in the kitchen preparing hot food and drinks!
As usual with DHC events, many of the ‘guests’ became hard-working washers up and clearers- up once the festivities were over. Bess led the candle lighting and prayers in an atmospherically lit shul. The children all received party bags, balloons and chocolate Channukah gelt. Several visiting Jewish families seem to have enjoyed the afternoon so much that they took away application forms to join the synagogue.
