After the erev Shabbat service led by lay leader Ray Honeybourne, the community enjoyed a relaxed and convivial meal organised by social club secretary, Estelle Solomon. Each course of the much appreciated 3 course meal was cooked by a different member. Thus the Kiddush organiser, Joyce served her home- made lentil soup, membership secretary Peninnah, a Persian vegetable stew with Persian rice and Estelle herself had made the dessert of Eton Mess. Other guests provided drinks, rolls and after dinner treats. The diners were delighted to be able to congratulate their President, Peter Freitag and his wife Valerie in person on the award in the recent birthday honours of MBE to Peter for services to the community of Darlington.
This will be the last Oneg Shabbat for DHC before building works start later in July to enlarge the Kiddush room into the hallway of the synagogue. When finished there will be room to accommodate more diners than the absolute (and cramped) limit of 20 seats currently available. The next social club event will be a violin concert and afternoon tea on Sunday, 30th August when it is hoped that the community will be able to admire the enlarged space and re-decoration of the premises for themselves.
