Nearly 50 people including more than a dozen children attended the Chanukah party at the Darlington shul. In true Darlington tradition, the food items brought by the party goers were not only very generous but also delicious. By starting on the buffet almost immediately and keeping snacking throughout the party, the guests managed to make a magnificent dent in the food mountain! A big thank you is owed to all who made contributions to the spread. Darlington chair, Peter Freitag, welcomed everyone to the synagogue and NRS chair, Bill Fleming attending with his son Benjamin, introduced himself to the community. There were many keen driedelers; Chanukah colouring sheets and a Chanukah quiz occupied a further group though many just preferred the opportunity for a good chat. Bess Robertson organised Israeli dancing for the more energetic and then led the community as we lit a large number of chanukiyot (the bar-mitzvah class helping with the brachot), sang rousingly and listened to the story of Judah the Maccabee and the Chanukah miracle by an atmospheric candlelight as we watched the Chanukah candles in a completely full shul.
A big thank you to all those who helped make it such a special occasion- organising, bringing food or drinks, setting up, clearing up (special mention is due to Jimmy and Miriam here for service beyond the call of duty), helping the children, participating in the service and above all by COMING!
