After a very easy journey by train from Sheffield DHC Vice –Chair Bess Robertson and our membership secretary namely myself, arrived in the very pleasant surroundings of Kenwood Hall in Sheffield for what was to be a most marvellous weekend spent in the company of nearly 200 other Jewish people from around the north plus a few ‘interlopers’ from down south. It would require a too lengthy article to describe everything fully but in summary; food and service, accommodation, organisation, setting and facilities, choice of study sessions, Shabbat services speakers and entertainment all brilliant. Coming from a tiny community it was a real emotional moment when everyone started singing ‘ma tovu’ on Shabbat morning. Bess and I sometimes attended the same sessions but more usually we had chosen different ones. We both enjoyed an oneg song session with Zoe Jacobs and the musical service led by Rabbi Haim Shalom from Manchester and Cantor Zoe Jacobs. The real abiding memory of the weekend however was the immensely warm feeling of being in the company of so many marvellous people, some we knew and others it was a pleasure to meet. We came home re-enthused about our Reform Judaism, full of new ideas great and small to help our community progress and with invitations for DHC members to visit and receive hospitality from Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle. Perhaps an idea for minibus outings for our social group?
