There was a good turn-out of people of all ages for the DHC observance of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah on Monday, 5th October. The community was truly delighted to be able to honour two people as Chatan Torah and Kallat Bereishit without whom the congregation could not operate and who have also been heavily involved in the organisation and supervision of a large-scale alteration, improvement and redecoration of the building over the summer. Both Martin Goldberg and Bess Robertson were supported by the attendance of several generations of family at a joyous and energetic service with dancing and enthusiastic singing. The service was led by Rabbi Dr Barbara Borts. She gave a brief outline of the immense contribution both Martin as buildings and maintenance supervisor, and Bess as Chair, have made to every aspect of the life of the community and the exemplar they give members by their continuing study at the DHC beit midrash. All present received an aliyah, the final one being taken by youngsters from the DHC Cheder. At the magnificent kiddush/lunch that followed, Bess and Martin thanked the members for the honour bestowed on them and the community’s support for their efforts. They were presented with certificates marking the occasion by Rabbi Borts on behalf of the community.
